That pretty much sums it up. The greatest fear for Australians is to be uncomfortable, noticed as different and to be potentially “unsafe.” Hurty words are illegal, negative feelings dangerous. Go to the beach, watch the sportsyball, drink away your existential grief. Don’t have individual thoughts, don’t create anything - especially not art - that’s for losers. Go to work. Go to work more (jobs and growth). Buy stuff. Go to Bali for a holiday - it’s cheap don’t ya know. You’re average, be content, be safe and follow the rules and all will be well. Do as we say and you will have a perfectly acceptable life - never reaching too high (except maybe in field of sport - that’s allowed), never dipping too low because risk is not the Australian way.

Here watch the slop - watch the people watch TV on TV hahaha - isn’t it funny. The correct answer is yes. How about those (insert sportsyball team)? Things are so expensive here you’ll never get ahead but that’s okay because average is the name of the game. Too poor for any real entrepreneurship but rich enough for a patio and a back fridge full of beer. Don’t think about how things could be better or how life could have more meaning. Just be thankful you don’t live in Ukraine … Grrr Putin!

Just be nice. You know the government is your friend here in Australia. If you are nice the police won’t hurt you and if they do hurt you it was an accident or you deserved it or … well fuck you, you have no guns so you’re screwed. The truth is on TV and compassion and kindness is all there is. Just look on the TV - everyone is so happy! We love trans people and retards and immigrants and well gosh darn everyone. Be like the TV people. Wear nice clothes - not too nice, remember you’re average. Smile and get your hair cut nice. Off you go now in your acceptable car at the speed limit. Drive safe. Go do your shopping at Coles, buy a lotto ticket - got to be in it to win it (does anyone ever actually win?). Imagine what you could do with a million dollars! - buy a house … just.

Welcome to Australia where our leader has a lisp. Where everything is just … fine. You can live here in reasonable comfort if you work 50hrs a week. You can go through life here without ever having a single original thought, a singular individual yearning - cradle to grave without so much as a skinned knee. Welcome to Australia, the dullest place on Earth and that’s how we like it.

This is the funniest thing I have read all week, funny and perceptive. (It's even funnier read out loud). And, thanks John for your piece 'Self-incarceration'. Sadly and against hope, I think many of the insights in it will age well.

'Bless you prison, bless you for being in my life. For there, lying upon the rotting prison straw, I came to realize that the object of life is not prosperity as we are made to believe, but the maturity of the human soul.'

I basically just channel my parents, who are retired (not that my mum ever worked yet feels entitled to call the unemployed bludgers). They have a nice house in a nice suburb. They have two nice cars and a caravan. They have a large TV (god) that has its own room! They love their god and watch it every day for hours. They eat all their meals under god's watchful irradiance. My father tells me the truths that god speaks. He says my extensive readings of long form independent journalism is wrong. He says I have a mental illness and should consult a high priest (doctor) about getting some pills for my condition. They take loads of pills for all kinds of things they probably don't even have. My mum has no interests and anything outside of her zero interests is stupid. My dad knows everything and if you disagree he doesn't want to know. My dad spent $600 on getting his lawn roto-mowed because it was "too spongy." But they're not rich and only have seven hundred thousand in the bank. My parents love footsyball and even know the names of some of the players. My parents are Aussies.

It's like you have completely read my thoughts and put them into written form in a way I never could. Excellent reply. (*clap clap emoji* - I'm still getting used to this platform).

You have hit a nail squarely with this one. I wonder if we ever could go back to the true spirit of Australian values? What would it take? Can it come from the grassroots, or are we to trust our government 😉

I wish I had answers... Well I do but no one wants to hear them and if anyone did have ideas that caught on they would try to kill them Desi Freeman-styles.

Just purchased your book as a pledge of support & of course I will love to share around. I will love to get the other short stories should they come back into stock.

This is well said for so many around me, however I beg to be different & it’s cringe to watch. I see so many are realising their doom but too lazy to do anything. I have 2 adult children. My mother is terrified of the things I’ve warned her about for the last 8 yrs. Her words quote “I know everything you e said in most part a true but I’ve probably only have 10 yrs left of my life so I want to enjoy it. Yes I’m worried but I just don’t want to know” An awesome Boomer mother - my reply - what about us and the grandkids? Her - shoulder shrug 🤷🏼‍♀️

I loved the pootube clip by omelette “utopia” it sums this up in a nutshell.

Thanks so much John. Your writings are exceptional.

Much love ❤️

One thing I find funny, although it is not remotely funny, Canada and Australia both allow muslims and antisemites to spew unmitigated hate, including mob intimidation and violence with little if any consequences. We have double standards, correct me if im wrong.

Correct. They're just expressing their culture. Have you seen that meme where there is a young woman talking to a young man and he says - I am against women having jobs I think they should stay home and have children and shouldn't be educated. And she says my god that's horrible you are a misogynist and he replies no I'm a Muslim to which she says - oh my god I'm so sorry, I hope I didn't offend you. Yeah that.

Anti Semites are allowed to spew hate? That must be why they keep putting them in prison and granting no bail before trial, when even murderers are usually given bail.

Sorry, but you don't even know Australian law. You dont get bail if you are Proven to be part of a terrorist organization. If not, the perpetrator is treated like many other criminal under Australian law.
