Civilisation
You can’t argue against the beauty of Prague.
Or the intellect of Socrates.
And people will fly halfway across the world just to see the Sistine Chapel.
Closer to home, Melbournians will mortgage themselves to the hilt to get an Edwardian.
History has produced undeniable excellence which echoes through time.
And it’s clear to me that some cultures produce incredible art, architecture, poetry, and wealth.
Whilst others do not.
Consider the fact that the whole world speaks the language of a tiny island nation off the coast of Europe.
That same country invented the system of law that keeps you safe, and the concept of property that lets you rent out your Paddington townhouse.
They conquered the world!
And now you’re trying to erase their accomplishments from our history books?
No thank you.
And for what?
To pay ‘respects’ to aboriginal elders five times a day?
I just can’t.
And I’ll probably get put in jail for pointing this out, but aboriginals couldn’t even invent the wheel.
Or build a pyramid.
Or write an epic poem.
Even after ‘60,000 years’.
So we have to think about what we actually value and respect.
I know that I respect Thomas Aquinas. And George Orwell. And Frank Sinatra. And Bret Easton Ellis. And Marcus Aurelias. And the American founders. And the Egyptians, the Romans, the Greeks.
Even those ‘evil’ British who sailed to the other side of the world, guided only by stars.
Because, unlike what the Marxists think, civilised society is not a given.
It was painstakingly created, one genius at a time.
Until eventually we got this tapestry of culture that’s the pinnacle of human civilisation.
And attracts people from all over the world.
Nobody is moving to Sudan, or North Korea, or Uzbekistan.
They’re going to the West: Australia, America, Germany and France.
We need to be realistic about why that is.
And protect it.
